Miyakejima, one of the Izu Seven Islands, is an active volcano in the Fuji volcanic belt that erupts repeatedly every 20 to 60 years.
The resulting majestic volcanic island landscape is a popular tourist destination.

It is designated as part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and the natural environment is also attractive, with certain wild birds being able to be observed.
In particular, Onohara Island, located 10km offshore, is a valuable breeding ground for the Japanese murrelet.

Miyakejima, which has been inhabited since the Jomon period, was known as a place of exile during the Edo period, and many knowledgeable exiles were sent there.
Among them are Kabuki actors, religious leaders, gangsters, and painters, and historical sites related to them are dotted around the island.
Additionally, more than half of the shrines in the Izu Islands are concentrated on Miyakejima, and many myths and legends remain.
Traditional festivals and events are also popular, such as the New Year's "Funeiwai" (Boat Celebration) and the "Gozu Tenno Festival" in July.

Fishing and agriculture are also active, with fishing for alfonsino and tuna, and cultivation of angelica leaves and passion fruit being thriving.

The island's unique geography has made it a fascinating subject for geologists and volcanologists.

▶Local communities
--------------------------

Miyakejima is divided into five districts, each with its own youth group that fosters community spirit through events such as the local Bon Odori dance.
Additionally, there are many sports teams and cultural clubs on the island, which contribute to the revitalization of the local community.

Many residents enjoy vegetable gardening at home and share their harvests with their neighbors.
Residents are also proactive in participating in local community activities, and cooperate with each other in community contribution activities such as mowing the grass.

--------------------------------

Miyakejima is surrounded by rich nature and is a tourist destination where you can enjoy marine sports and land activities.
In addition to marine activities such as diving, fishing, and swimming in the sea, land activities such as trekking, cycling, and bird watching are also popular.
In particular, the waters where the Kuroshio Current directly hits are a treasure trove of fish, and you can enjoy harpoon fishing for large fish or swimming on a private beach where you have the shore all to yourself.

Dolphin swimming on the neighboring island of Mikurajima is world-famous, with an encounter rate of over 99%.
In the underwater world, where the terrain is unique to volcanic islands, you can encounter colorful tropical fish and sea turtles.

Additionally, Bird Island and the area around Oji Pond, where over 200 species of wild birds live, are popular spots for birdwatchers, and the Miyakejima Nature Center Akakkokko Hall provides excellent bird watching spots.
