The area prospered as a post town on the Koshu Kaido road and still maintains a tranquil atmosphere today, dotted with historical sites such as the ancient temples Takahatafudo and Hinojuku Honjin.

It is also the hometown of the Shinsengumi, and the birthplace of their vice-commander, Toshizo Hijikata, and their sixth squad commander, Genzaburou Inoue. The city also holds the Shinsengumi Festival in May.

Certified as one of the "Top 100 Water Towns" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, this area is blessed with water resources and once flourished as a rice producer, earning it the nickname "Tama's rice storehouse." However, during the Showa period, it transformed into an industrial city, with major automobile companies, watch shops and other businesses moving in, and it developed into a castle town for large corporations.
Currently, the area is a mixture of residential, industrial, and agricultural land, and urban development is taking advantage of its geographical characteristics.
