◆Black Jack & Pinoko statues, manhole covers with Black Jack designs (installed in six locations around the city)
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Higashikurume's establishment as a city in 2020, Higashikurume City and the Higashikurume Chamber of Commerce and Industry have produced and installed five manhole covers and a monument (bronze statue) designed with characters from the manga "Black Jack."
Also in 2024, we produced and installed a new manhole cover with a design of "Pinoko", a character from the manga "Black Jack".
◆Ochiai River and Minamisawa Springs
The city's "Ochiai River and Minamizawa Springs" were the only ones selected as one of the "Heisei 100 Best Waters." The waterside of the Ochiai River is bustling with children playing in the water in the summer.

Local information

◆Yanagikubo Wheat

It is said that this udon was born in 1850 (Kaei 3) during the Edo period, from a single ear of wheat brought back from a trip by Okuzumi Mataemon, a resident of what is now Yanagikubo, Higashikurume City. The wheat produced was of high quality, and when made into udon noodles it had a great aroma and was very popular. It disappeared for a time due to the difficulty of mass production, but in recent years it has been successfully revived by Mataemon's descendants. With the cooperation of farmers in the city, production has increased, and many related products such as udon, manju, bread, and karinto are now sold.
