What is the Tama Islands Region?

◆AEON Cinema Theater Chofu
This is one of the largest cinema complexes in the Tama area, which opened in 2017. It is a landmark of Chofu, the city of movies, and features the Grand Theater, which is fully equipped with the highest quality cinema seats.

◆Chofu City Library (11 libraries in the city)
The total collection of the libraries is 140 million books. Each library has a children's room where, in addition to picture books and materials for children, there are also lists of recommended books and books recommended for reading aloud. The Central Library in Chofu City Cultural Center Taduri has a film reference room and an audiovisual reference room in honor of Chofu being the "Chofu City of Movies," where you can also view scripts from Nikkatsu and Daiei.

Chofu City Local History Museum
Chofu City Museum of Local History holds exhibitions, lectures, courses, and hands-on learning sessions on a variety of themes related to local history, culture, and nature. It holds archaeological materials excavated from ruins in the city, historical materials such as old documents and old photographs, and art materials related to the local area, which are introduced in the permanent exhibition "The History of Chofu" and special exhibitions held several times a year.

◆ Chofu City Jindaiji Waterwheel Museum
There is a restored watermill, the last remaining watermill in Chofu City, and an exhibition corridor that introduces the life and livelihood of the Musashino Plateau. The site of the Watermill Museum was formerly the site of a communal watermill built by local people pooling their money together at the end of the Meiji period. Inside the watermill, you can experience polishing rice and grinding flour using a mortar (reservations required, and bringing your own raw materials).
*The waterwheel has been stopped due to damage caused by aging. Tours of the inside of the watermill and use of the mortar are suspended for the time being. [As of March 2023]

Chofu City Mushanokoji Saneatsu Memorial Museum
From the Meiji to Showa periods, Mushanokoji Saneatsu achieved great things in a wide range of fields, including literature, art, philosophy and theater. In 30, at the age of 70, he moved to Sengawa in Chofu City, fulfilling his childhood wish to live somewhere with water, and spent the next 51 years there until his death in 90 at the age of 20. After his death, his family donated his mansion and many valuable documents to Chofu City, and in response, a memorial hall was opened in 60 to introduce Saneatsu's life and achievements. The museum is connected to Saneatsu Park, where his mansion is open to the public, by an underground passage.

Chofu City Tama River Nature Information Center
This is an environmental learning facility that introduces the city's natural environment, centered around the Tama River, and is a fun place for children and adults to learn. Inside the facility are an exhibition room where you can see actual Tama River fish, plants, and insects, an aquatic pool that recreates a mini Tama River ecosystem, and a study room with books on the natural environment. There are also monthly events and programs that teach about the Tama River and Chofu's environment (the facility opened in April 22, although the exhibition room opened on July 4, 22).

Tokyo Metropolitan Jindai Botanical Gardens

◆Climate
Located in the center of Tokyo, it has good access to the city center, with Shinjuku just 15 minutes away on the Keio Line, and there are nine stations within the city.

The area is also known for its abundance of nature, with rivers such as the Tama River and the Nogawa River flowing through it.

◆History and Culture
It developed as a post town on the Koshu Kaido road from the Edo period.
Even today, there are many old temples and shrines in the area, and the ancient temple "Jindaiji," which was founded in the Nara period, holds a "Daruma Market," which preserves the local culture to this day.

Shigeru Mizuki, known as the creator of Gegege no Kitaro and other manga, lived here for over 11 years, and the city is known as the "birthplace of Mizuki's manga," and an event called "Gegege Memorial Day" is held around November 30th, the anniversary of his death. It is also known as a "film town," with many film and video-related businesses concentrated here.

◆Local communities
There are 26 shopping districts in the city, which serve as places for the local community (as of January 7).

◆Sightseeing & Activities
Representative tourist destinations include Jindaiji Temple, known as one of the Kanto region's leading ancient temples, and Tokyo Metropolitan Jindai Botanical Gardens.
Jindaiji Temple has long been known as a temple for warding off evil and bringing people together, and is also famous for its local specialty, Jindaiji soba noodles.

Jindai Botanical Garden is home to approximately 4,800 plants from 10 different species, allowing you to enjoy a variety of flowers and greenery throughout the four seasons.

◆ Information on immigration
For children, the full cost of medical expenses for both outpatient and inpatient care is subsidized under the "Medical Expense Subsidy System for Infants, Children of Compulsory Education, and High School Students" (up to the first March 18st after reaching the age of 3).

◆ "Paraheart Chofu" Initiative
With the Tokyo 2020 Games as a catalyst, the city has established the catchphrase "Para Heart Chofu" with the hope that "we want many people in and outside the city to deepen their understanding of various disabilities, to have compassion for each other, and to realize a society where people can live together hand in hand," and is using the logo and art designs created at related events to promote awareness of the initiative. As part of the Para Heart Chofu initiative, the city continues to hold events such as the "Chofu City Para Art Exhibition," which displays artwork by people working at welfare workshops and other facilities in the city.

◆Chofu, the city of movies
Chofu City is home to a large number of film and video-related businesses, and was once known as the "Hollywood of the East" in the 1950s. Currently, the city is taking advantage of its film resources to carry out film-related projects, including the Chofu Cinema Festival. The city also has a film commission that attracts film and TV locations, and publishes a "filming location map."

Chofu, the birthplace of Mizuki's manga
In honor of Shigeru Mizuki, an honorary citizen of Chofu City, the city holds an event called "GeGeGe Memorial Day" on November 11th, the anniversary of his death. You can meet Kitaro and his friends in various places in the city.
