Local information

-----------
▶Climate
-----------

The entire island is volcanic, and has a beautiful natural environment with a double caldera structure that is rare worldwide.
The collaboration between the majestic nature inside the caldera and the Pacific Ocean outside is a spectacular and beautiful sight that will take your breath away.
It has been selected as one of the "13 most beautiful sights you must see before you die" by an overseas environmental protection NGO, and is attracting worldwide attention.
-------------------
▶History and Culture
-------------------

The first inhabitants of Aogashima are said to have been there from around the 15th century.
After a major eruption in 1785, the islanders evacuated to Hachijojima and Aogashima became uninhabited for a time, but people returned in 1835.
Aogashima has long prospered through livestock farming, and to show their appreciation for cows, they hold a Cow Festival every year on August 8th.
Local cuisine, fresh seafood, and wild angelica trees form the island's unique food culture.

The local specialty "Aochu" has different flavors depending on the brewing method used by each master brewer.
--------------------------
▶Local communities
--------------------------

Aogashima is the least populated island in Japan, and people here value their connections with each other.
The islanders cooperate with each other and create an environment where they can take on new challenges.

The medical, welfare, and health facilities are housed in a complex called the "Ojare Center," which is also used as a place of relaxation for the islanders.
In recent years, as the internet environment has improved, the number of facilities such as shared houses and guesthouses has increased, and the area is becoming more welcoming to immigrants and travelers.
The island is also attracting attention from young people from outside the island and people who are able to work remotely, with offers such as resort part-time jobs.
--------------------------------
▶Sightseeing & Activities
--------------------------------

Because there are only a few private lodgings available, you will need to make a reservation at a private lodging or village-run campsite before coming to the island.

Oyama Observation Park is a scenic spot that offers a panoramic view of the caldera and is popular with tourists.
In addition, the geothermal sauna "Aogashima Fureai Sauna" is a natural sauna that uses the geothermal energy "Hingya", and is a popular spot in the village as well as a beloved spot among the villagers.
"Hingya" was used for heating and cooking in the days before electricity, and salt made by heating seawater in this "hingya" is a specialty of the village.
▶Oyama Observatory

Aogashima, described as an "isolated island in the middle of the ocean," boasts spectacular views.
From the outer rim, which has a large convex part that has been selected as one of the 10 New Tokyo Views, you can see Maruyama, the inner rim of the double caldera. From late October to early April, you can see Canopus, a star that appears just above the horizon in the southern sky, which is rare in the northern hemisphere.
▶Sambo Port

This is the only port on Aogashima Island, and you can see the rare sight of a ship being lifted by a crane.
Since the ship cannot be moored at the port due to the lack of a breakwater, etc., a crane is used to transport the ship to a dock on land.
▶ Jouman Community Farm

If you head north from the island settlement, you will come across a vast grassland plateau.
You can see the whole expanse of green and the beautiful blue of the sky and sea at the same time.
There are no street lights, so you can enjoy a starry sky at night. You can also encounter Japanese black beef raised on Aogashima.
▶Aogashima Village Community Sauna

This is a natural sauna that utilizes the geothermal energy emitted in the Ikenosawa area.
It is a place where tourists as well as villagers can come together.
▶Maruyama Promenade
A walking trail that goes around Maruyama.
It's about a 20-minute leisurely walk, observing the seasonal flowers and birds.
The Pacific Ocean peeking through the gaps in the low outer rim of the volcano called Kaneda is a magnificent sight.

▶Immigration Information
--------------------------------

There is only one store on Aogashima, which sells food and daily necessities, but there are no clothing stores or electronics retailers.
As the transportation of supplies is dependent on the weather, we have a large stock of frozen foods that can be stored.

If something is not available on the island, we order it from other islands via the internet or magazines.
It takes time, but once you get used to it, it won't be a big inconvenience.

A fixed amount is paid as child allowance.
From this information, it can be said that although life on Aogashima may seem difficult at first glance, it can be overcome with ingenuity and practice.
